Our Favorite Swimming Spots in Acadia National Park

One of the best ways to cool off after a hike or long day of exploring is to find a swimming hole tucked into the natural beauty of Mount Desert Island. While the ocean waters around Acadia can be brisk, there are a few favorite local spots that offer warmer water, easy access, and unforgettable views. Here are a few of our top recommendations for a refreshing dip while visiting Acadia:

1. Echo Lake Ledges
Location: Southwest of Acadia Mountain trailhead
Skip the crowds at the main beach and head to the ledges! These rocky outcroppings are a local favorite for jumping into the lake or simply lounging by the water. You’ll find a short trail and stairs leading down from the Acadia Mountain parking area.

Pro tip: Pack a swimsuit and towel in the car. This is the perfect spontaneous swim spot after a hike.

2. Somes Pond
Location: Off Oak Hill Road, near Somesville
This small, quiet pond warms up faster than most swimming spots on the island. It’s great for families and floaties and has big boulders perfect for sunbathing.

Pro tip: Bring a float or paddle board for a relaxing ride across the calm water.

3. Lake Wood Pond
Location: Off Crooked Road via Lakewood Drive
Often cited as the warmest swimming spot on MDI, this hidden gem has a sandy bottom and easy access. There’s even a short trail that leads to a deep-water jumping spot.

Pro tip: Best visited mid-morning or early evening for peaceful surroundings.

4. Valley Cove Beach
Location: End of Flying Mountain trail
This pebble beach is perfect after a hike over Flying Mountain. The secluded cove offers calm ocean water and unbeatable views of Somes Sound.

Pro tip: Pack a picnic and enjoy the afternoon away from the crowds.

5. Seal Harbor Beach
Location: Southeast side of the island
While not as hidden as others, this beach is known for its calm surf and picturesque setting. It’s a great alternative to the busy Sand Beach.

Pro tip: Arrive early or visit in the evening for a more peaceful swim.

Don’t forget your bug spray, water shoes, and a towel. The water may be cold, but the views and memories will be well worth it. Whether you're cooling off after a ride or planning a full beach day, these swimming spots are some of the best Acadia has to offer.

Happy swimming!
